India may not be the most ideal region for viticulture, however due to its large diversity in climate and geology, it provides us with suitable terroirs. Vineyards are normally planted at higher altitudes along hillsides and slopes so as to be exposed to the cooler air and gain protection from wind. India's larger wine producing regions are situated in Karnataka, Telangana and Maharashtra. Most of the vineyards in Maharashtra are located on the Deccan Plateau and are around Pune, Solapur, Sangli, Nashik and Baramati.
