Sangiovese
Red Wine

Robert Parker Notes : The 2013 Rosso di Montalcino is a dark and saturated wine with aromas that are much more masculine and muscular than your standard Rosso. The wine awards whiffs of dark cherry, cedar wood, spice, licorice and wet earth. All the while it offers a pretty portrait of Montalcino's southern subzone where the weather is slightly more influenced by Mediterranean patterns. The mouthfeel delivers a touch of acidic bitterness that is reminiscent of white cherry or cranberry. This Rosso can be cheerfully consumed within the next three to five years. Fabrizio Bindocci and his son Alessandro are the most accomplished father-son winemaking team I can think of today in Italy. Il Poggione is owned by Leopoldo and Livia Franceschi, but the phenomenal Bindocci duo are very much in the limelight. They excel in every aspect of winemaking, from vineyard management to wine marketing. Never have I encountered a Il Poggione Brunello as beautiful as the one released this year. This is one of the highest expression of Sangiovese you will ever taste.

Tasting Notes : Younger, more accessible version of Brunello, but already very well-developed with a strong character, Rosso di Montalcino is a very important wine for Tenuta Il Poggione. Produced entirely from Sangiovese grapes from the youngest of the estate’s vineyards, Rosso di Montalcino is matured for 12 months in large barrels before undergoing a period of bottle aging. Aging in wood, though not obligatory for the production of Rosso di Montalcino, tones down the tannins typical of a young Sangiovese and gives this red wine the complex aroma and body that make it a great “young Brunello”. Intense ruby red colour. Fruity bouquet with red berry notes. Very well structured, mellow, long-lasting flavour with smooth, velvety tannins.
