Wine Spectator Notes : An old-school version, with bittersweet ganache and roasted tobacco leaf notes forming a frame around the steeped currant and blackberry fruit flavors. Singed bay and leather hints line the grippy finish. Rock-solid. Best from 2017 through 2027. 1,250 cases made.

Robert Parker Notes : The 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape showed nicely from barrel last year, and didn't disappoint this go around. Offering a classic feel in its Provencal herbs, black raspberry, licorice and peppery bouquet, it's medium to full-bodied, shows the vintage's voluptuous texture and has outstanding length. It already has plenty of appeal, yet it will evolve gracefully for at least another decade. Louis Barruol’s Chateau de Saint Cosme continues to be the reference point estate in Gigondas; Gigondas--and Grenache for that matter--doesn’t get much better than his single vineyard releases from parcels located just around his estate. The winemaking here is traditional, with no destemming and aging occurring all in older barrels. While the upper tier wines can be tannic and difficult to understand in their youth, they age beautifully, normally starting to show nicely around age 6-7 and then evolving gracefully going forward. In addition to his Gigondas and Côtes du Rhône releases, Barruol continues to make wines from the northern Rhône as well, and I’ve included all of his currently releases here.

Tasting Notes : Try to vinify and age a good Châteauneuf is for me a strange exercise. These grapes that I know quite well behave in Châteauneuf in a very different way. It has nothing to do with the knowledge that I got by making Gigondas wines. So, I think I need to forget every year about my Gigondas experiences before beginning the vintage in Châteauneuf. As a grower, trying to transpose a knowledge to another situation is probably a mistake if the final goal is to leave the terroir talk. As an example, it explains why I age Châteauneuf in a different way: 24 months in older barrels. The reds from Châteauneuf need a long ageing. It doesn’t make them more or less ageable on the long term but they do need this long time in barrels to reveal themselves. Châteauneuf took advantage of the freshness of the vintage 2012, just like 2010. The balance is really good and gives to the wine a good identity. For sure it is a less extroverted Châteauneuf than the 2010, but this is very refined. - Louis Barruol, winemaker at Château de Saint Cosme
